Features
Employs Guided Inquiry: Living By Chemistry uses an inquiry-based approach to encourage students to ask questions and propose explanations based on evidence. This "experience-first" program is supported by daily lesson plans with hands-on activities to guide students’ in-class discovery. The student edition then supports in-class activities with at-home reading to further explain concepts.
Engages and Differentiates: Living By Chemistrys six units focus on big ideas of chemistry and frame core concepts within every-day, real-world contexts. The hands-on activities support all learners and capture students interest while improving retention of concepts.
Ideal Preparation for the AP® Chemistry Course: Author Angelica Stacy assisted in the development of the NGSS standards and served on the AP® Chemistry redesign committee. She designed Living By Chemistry as an introduction for students who will take AP® Chemistry or additional college classes.
Research Based: Living By Chemistry was developed as a National Science Foundation project and is the product of a decade of research and development in high school classrooms focusing on optimizing student understanding of chemical principles.
Chapter Openings introduce the main ideas and learning goals of the chapter.
Example Problems and Exercises provide students with many opportunities to practice problem solving.
Featured Demos, Activities, and Labs allow students to see the concepts covered in the chapter and work on them firsthand.
Math Spotlights: Quick reviews of important math topics.
Unit Reviews revisit the big ideas and also give students practice in test-taking. New to the Updated Second Edition: Each unit review ends with an engineering project that puts the concepts of the unit into action.
English/Spanish Glossary
New to This Edition
"I believe we have implemented the materials very close to how Angelica had envisioned. Following the embedded learning sequence has proved very effective for our students. We realize, and believe, that LBC is much more than a chemistry book, but that it is a rich, robust curriculum that meets the needs of students to reach a deep, contextual understanding of chemistry."
—Sharon M. Sikora, Punahou School (HI)
